What Is Xanax (Alprazolam) and What Is It Used For?

What Is Xanax?
Xanax is the brand name for alprazolam, a benzodiazepine medication widely prescribed for anxiety disorders and panic attacks. It works by enhancing the effect of a naturally occurring chemical in the body called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which calms excessive nerve activity in the brain.
Medical Uses of Xanax
- Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)
- Panic disorder — with or without agoraphobia
- Social anxiety disorder
- Short-term relief of anxiety symptoms
How Does Xanax Work?
Alprazolam binds to GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system, amplifying the inhibitory effect of GABA. This results in a calming, sedative, muscle-relaxant and anticonvulsant effect, with onset typically within 15–30 minutes of an oral dose.
Available Strengths
Xanax is commonly available in 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg tablets. The 2 mg “bar” is the highest-strength immediate-release form. Extended-release formulations (Xanax XR) are also available for once-daily dosing.
Xanax vs Kalma: What is Kalma?
Kalma is an Australian brand of alprazolam. It contains the same active ingredient as Xanax and is considered therapeutically equivalent. Both are available at MedicViber.
